whats the diference between those pairs of sentences: when would u use one n not the other? etc...
try and give me your native intuitions and feelings rather than 'grammar book' explanations coz i do have grammar rules for them:

1. "you won't believe this" and "you are not going to believe this."

2. "i would like to thank the following people...." and "i should like to thank the following people....."

can sentence 3 - "it's astonishing that she should say that sort of thing to u" be paraphrased as
- "it's astonishing that she SAYS that sort of thing to you"
or

.... SAID ...... ?

- or in both ways?

or maybe if i mean "its astonishing that she SAID that sort of thing to you" then i shud say " its astonishing that she should HAVE SAID that sort of thing to u"

thanx

Well I would say

1. The second why is just more formal way of writing and so if you were giving a formal speech or writing to employer you would write "you are not going to believe this." If you were talking or writing to friends the first way is acceptable. Also the latter pre-empts a amazing statement.

2. I know the grammar books say you can substitute should after we or I but I feel should implies something you must do so I’d always use would.

3. This one has given me a headache

You can substitute using SAID

Says would be OK if it was an on going situation, but the original text would need to read "it's astonishing that she should say THESE sort of THINGS to u"

Also " its astonishing that she should HAVE SAID that sort of thing to u" sounds right but I do not think you can use should HAVE SAID means it is something she did not say.

If I were to write the state, ment

"its astonishing that she SAID that sort of thing to you"

I agree with mark one. Here are my thoughts as well.

1. The meaning is the same for each sentence. You could also write "You will not believe this." The second sentence in your example is often used when you really want to emphasize the point, such as a juicy item of gossip you are about to disclose. Also when saying the second sentence each individual word of the sentence is probably clearly pronounced with extra emphasis.

2. Again the meaning is essentially the same. You could also write "I want to/will/am going to thank the following people." And here "should" may mean the speaker feels obligated to thank the people and perhaps is only doing so because of this feeling. But not necessarily, it could also be that the word "should" came out of the speakers mouth as a space filler while the speaker is thinking about what to say.

3. All of your options work. I think the last "should have said" really emphasizes that you are astonished that she felt obligated to say that sort of thing to you.
