Thanks again for taking the time to answer my question. I know you don't have the past perfect in Polish , but would your answer not mean more like they have been married for thirty years? Implying that they still are married. I was thinking more of they had been married for thirty years, implying that they no longer were so. Does that make sense? Could you say 'byli małżeństwem od trzydziestu lat' ?

Yes, I'm sorry, you're right. I just glanced at the first sentence and just saw present perfect there while in fact it is past perfect. Cyber's answer is correct.

Please, no need to apologise. I do find it very strange however , that Polish has no past perfect tense, or rather it does , but it's not used any more. We won't go there though , as that road has been well trodden on this forum before :lol:
