Tytuł:  to suffer attrition

Could anybody, please, help me with the word "attrition" in the sentence below:
"During the black-and-white era of book illustration it was axiomatic that each and ever children's book called for some form of illustration. This extended to the large category of novels for the upper reading ages, which was to suffer progressive attrition as print runs shortened." I'd like to either learn the meaning of this word in english, or it's "translation" into Polish.
Thanks!
